Introduction

Joe, can you tell us about your background and how your work connects with Mantle Guard, MI4, and the broader Mantle ecosystem? What sets these initiatives apart for institutional investors today?

I’m Joe Zhou, and after more than two decades across investment banking, asset management, and the world of blockchain regulation in Asia and North America, I’ve devoted my energy to building bridges between institutions and the emerging digital asset landscape. My journey led me to Mantle Guard, which is all about setting standards for compliance, transparency, and institutional trust in the Web3 era.

As part of the Mantle ecosystem, MI4 stands out as a flagship, onchain index. It’s designed to give institutional-grade exposure to major digital assets, backed by a dynamic, momentum-based strategy, top-tier custody partners, and strict regulatory discipline. MI4 isn’t just another crypto fund: it’s rebalanced, tokenized, and engineered for ease of onboarding and yield generation, with every feature built to make institutional buyers comfortable in a rapidly evolving market.

Mantle network itself is a decentralized framework that supports our efforts in building composable, scalable Web3 infrastructure. Every aspect is focused on the ecosystem: institutional partnerships, compliance controls, and ongoing product innovation all interconnect so we can raise the bar for digital asset safety and transparency.

Opening & Strategy

How do you decide which institutions or verticals to target first, and why? What frameworks or criteria guide your go-to-market strategy for institutional sales? And finally, how do you adapt your messaging for CIOs, investment committees, and procurement teams?

When we set our sights on new verticals, it’s always about finding where regulatory clarity meets clear demand. Regulated finance and asset management are first picks, they want transparency and institutional-grade exposure. Having ecosystem partners like Securitize, KPMG, and Fireblocks from day one cements our credibility and opens doors that might otherwise be closed.

For Mantle Guard, go-to-market means compliance comes first. Every process gets scrutiny from external auditors, then layered with the standards our partners already expect. We deliberately keep our messaging market-neutral and educational, and always audit across jurisdictions for every campaign or outreach.

I’ve learned you never want to drop generic one-size-fits-all decks: CIOs are laser-focused on risk and returns, committees want ironclad governance and compliance, and procurement cares about operational due diligence. We run each comms cycle through compliance and legal before it ever gets to a prospect.

Building Pipeline & Relationships

What lead generation channels produce the most traction with institutional buyers? What role does personalization or account-based marketing play in your sales process and, how do you nurture relationships and build trust before the first deal closes?

The biggest spikes in our pipeline usually follow two things: major industry coverage and partnership announcements. Coverage in The Block or Cointelegraph, plus big events on our calendar, have always produced better leads than outbound alone. But sustainable pipeline? That’s built by staying transparent and consistent with partner updates, complemented by outreach provided by Leadsourcing.

Personalization is crucial but still maturing at Mantle Guard. The audit pointed out we’re strong at targeting by region, institution type, and regulatory profile, but there’s more to do, especially on shaping custom engagement strategies for unique client needs.

To build genuine trust, I make an effort to know my client well before I even meet them. I spend time researching on social media and public sources to understand their needs and interests. That way, when I walk into the first meeting, I already know what matters most to them and can address their exact requirements from the start.

Overcoming Hurdles & Objections

What common objections or concerns do institutions raise, and how do you address them? How is compliance (GDPR, SOC2, etc.) positioned and communicated during the sales process? And of course, can you share an example of a long, complex sales cycle, and what moved it forward?

It typically starts with questions about regulatory clarity: are we GDPR compliant, has third-party audit been done recently, who’s the custodian? Product differentiation is another one. We let the documentation, legal opinions, and ecosystem partnerships speak for themselves, addressing each point with transparency and nothing left to chance.

Compliance isn’t a marketing checkbox for us; it’s the baseline. We position credentials like SOC2 and GDPR as essentials for doing business. These are always proactively part of our diligence packages and outlined in the very first conversations.

When selling MI4, I worked with a family office that was actively researching crypto. I knew from my own research that they had never invested before, but they were eager to learn. Their interest was real, but there was friction due to their lack of prior investment. That’s why MI4 was designed in a way that they could understand, and I approached them with a clear profile and educational support tailored to their situation. This responsiveness helped move the sales process forward.

Metrics, Results & Lessons

What KPIs define success for your institutional sales team? How do you measure and accelerate time-to-close for large deals? And what’s the most surprising lesson you’ve learned about selling to institutional investors?

For Mantle Guard, success is tracked by AUM milestones, the speed and quality of onboarding, and the resonance of our transparency with prospects, hitting $200M AUM in August 2025 was historic. But every KPI is only as good as the compliance and investor protection supporting it.

Jackee: Communication is everything. Timely legal review, partner references, and consistent updates get deals over the line. Closing a high-compliance institutional deal is all about educating the client, sometimes we have to pave new ground in terms of what’s possible with onchain governance. Jackee: What’s one case study or client success that best showcases your approach?

We always showcase our wins by emphasizing the framework: compliance, documentation, and milestone-driven communications. We never suggest that past AUM or performance will guarantee future results, just that these examples reflect how institutional structures work in real-world scenarios.

You need to approach institutional sales from both the top down and the bottom up. Relying solely on working-level staff isn’t enough, no matter how supportive they are. For every major deal, the final decision always rests with the top decision-makers, so engaging them directly is critical for success.

Market Trends & Innovation

Jackee: What industry trends have changed the way institutions buy in the past 2 years? How do you leverage AI or data analytics to identify or engage institutional prospects?

The pace of institutional education about tokenized assets and onchain compliance is light-years ahead of where it was just two years ago. Tokenized funds and onchain governance are no longer pilot concepts. they’re live in front of regulators and pushing the bar up on what buyers now demand.

We’re early in this journey, but the writing’s on the wall: AI and advanced analytics are rapidly reshaping outreach, prospect targeting, and engagement analysis. Mantle Guard is working on embedding this tech from leadsourcing into our compliance stack, but for us, safety and regulatory alignment come before speed or scale.

Thankfully, the Leadsourcing team are experts are building scale for regulated products, and so, I look forward to continued success with our Leadsourcing collaboration.
